Choosing the Best Pruning Shears: Cutting Systems

For perfect pruning, the choice of blade is essential. The mechanism must suit the type of wood (green or dry) and the delicacy of the plant. Here are the differences between bypass, double-cut, and anvil systems.

Bypass Secateurs

Bypass shears are the most versatile and widely used in professional gardening. They feature a curved blade that slides past a counter-blade, creating a clean cut similar to household scissors.

• Ideal use: Live wood, green branches, shrubs, and fruit trees.
• Advantages: Clean, precise cut that promotes rapid healing, minimizing plant stress.

Double-Edge Pruning Shears

A hallmark of the finest Italian tradition, double-edge shears feature two sharp blades that meet exactly in the center of the branch.

• Ideal use: Pruning fruit trees, and citrus groves.
• Advantages: Prevents wood crushing and allows for extremely precise cuts close to the trunk, eliminating the risk of leaving stubs that could rot.

Anvil Pruning Shears

The anvil system features a single sharp blade that closes against a flat fixed surface (the anvil), acting like a small guillotine.

• Ideal use: Dead wood, hardwoods, old and woody branches.
• Advantages: This mechanism multiplies the force exerted, making it easier to remove dead wood without straining the operator.
